Christ died for us out of love. He commanded us to 'go and do likewise' to our neighbors. |
However, I am sad, not because of the season but because of the people who celebrate the season. I am sad that out of the twelve months of the year, people only acknowledge the existence of the poor and marginalized in just a week because it's Easter and they want to appear meek and pure.
The truth is that the poor, homeless, naked, hungry, and sick have always been with us. We live with them every day and know all their needs. Do we have to treat our neighbors that way? Must our love be seasonal? I don't think God shows seasonal love to us. So, if we are imitating God, why not imitate the way He loves us by reaching out to our marginalized folk in the streets and showing them the God in us?
I am imagining the day we would send our gifts to the poor and marginalized and they will reject same with the excuse that they have survived throughout the year without our food. That they begged us for food, clothing, and shelter and we snubbed them when they needed it most. That they are fed up with how we treat them like a nuisance among us. Let's not give people the opportunity to tag us as hypocrites because of how we live our faith.
