A Dazed DiSeC, The Robbers' Prayer

Recently, Sandema, the once highly revered town, has come into the spotlight for the alarming rate of armed robbery in the town. With the rampant daylight robberies of businesses and individuals, the once free town has been gripped with fear and panic. These days, people begin to run helter-skelter at the blast of a car tire, without looking back to know the cause of the noise.

The issue of armed robbery activities took a turn for the worst when some residents demonstrated against the manner the police were coldly handling the situation and were sued by the police at the Navrongo District Court for unlawful assembly. The case was thrown out for a lack of jurisdiction. The police and other security officers went back to default settings afterward.

About six armed robberies in just four days sent a lot of fear and panic across the length and breadth of the town because the security officers took no action to counter the activities of the robbers.

Some residents even suspect some police officers may be facilitating the activities of the robbers by leaking information to them and helping them escape arrest as well as supplying them with ammunition. Others also believe that a majority of police officers and other security officers posted to the district are just incompetent.

Some people also blame the MCE, the head of DiSeC, for not being firm and decisive in dealing with the poor security situation in his municipality. The DiSeC seems to have been dazed by the situation and cannot see clearly through it.

Many people in the district, especially Sandema, are beginning to make silent calls on the traditional authorities to act by invoking the deities.

As we are still struggling to come up with a plan to tackle the menace, the robbers continue to have their way.

What do you also think should be the way forward to resolving this problem of armed robbery in our districts?
