Buluk Youth Associations; Are They Relevant?

Youth associations are often prominent when the year is getting to an end. These youth associations are sectional in nature. It is common to see t-shirts with labels such as Nyaansa Youth Association, Bilinsa Youth Association, Balansa Youth Association, and similar labels.
The surprising thing about these youth associations is that they cease to function after the festive season is done with and resurrect to celebrate another end of year get-together.

Most youth associations in Ghana have causes they champion throughout the year that are often developmental in nature. But the youth associations in Buluk seem to just exist in name only. They don't champion any developmental cause. They have become more of alcohol intoxication clubs than development-oriented ones.

The leaders of these groups have turned them into business ventures where they can sell t-shirts to make money. Some of them even grudge over the money made by selling t-shirts.

Vibrant youth associations, even in places perceived to be war zones, are able to get together and pressurize the government to get a share of national development to their communities. Mind you, they also have political parties they are dyed-in-the-wool supporters of. But when it comes to the development of their communities, they don't give a damn which political affiliation one belongs. They speak with one voice in matters of development.

The same cannot be said of Buluk youth associations. It is often said in some quarters sarcastically that, where two or more Bulsa youth are gathered, expect divisions. People will oppose anything and everything, not because they have some superior suggestions to make, but because they don't like the person making the suggestion. And some of their dislikes are attributable to political affiliations. And being a loyal political henchman means to see no evil and hear no evil.

But, if youth associations will only become relevant during festive seasons, if they will only serve the purpose of gathering to show fashion, drink alcohol and dance, and if they will only exist on printed T-shirts without any positive action for the betterment of Buluk, then there is no need for them.

If the youth of Buluk will not put aside their political fanaticism and focus on a better Buluk, then our development woes will only worsen with each passing government. Our neighbors and other newly created districts will continue to widen the development gap between us and them.

Buluk youth, it is not late yet. Let's resolve to unite and speak with a common voice on the things that matter in terms of development. It must not always be about politics and comparisons. Let it not be said of the youth of Buluk that others have found the path to development while we are still groping in the dark. It is often said that only a fool doesn't learn from his mistakes.

    1. I sincerely think some of Buluk's problems are as a result of supposedly 'educated' people. People who should know better are willing to pull others down any day without thinking twice. This is not good for Buluk and her development. We lag behind because we hardly come to a consensus on any issue about Buluk and development. We have, by this attitude of ours, put ourselves out to be a laughing stock to other districts and traditional societies. It's a shame we tow political lines and take entrenched positions when matters of Buluk are discussed.
